Apps have become a core part of how we live, work and play in today’s fast-paced, digital world. In the UK, it’s estimated that 92% of the population owns a smartphone, and apps are at the heart of everything, from managing finances to staying connected with friends and family. Whether you’re new to using apps or want to maximise your mobile experience, understanding how to download, use and stay safe with apps is essential.

What are apps and what do they do?

Apps (short for applications) are software programmes that perform specific tasks on your device, whether that’s a smartphone, tablet or computer. They are designed to make your everyday activities easier, faster and more efficient.

From social media apps like Instagram and TikTok to productivity apps like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, apps come in a range of categories. There are banking apps (Monzo, Barclays etc.), transport apps (Citymapper, Trainline etc.) and entertainment apps (BBC iPlayer, Netflix etc.).

By tapping into the power of apps, you can pay your bills, book a holiday or order your weekly shopping – all from your mobile device. Whether you want news updates, to track your fitness regime, or simply download mobile slots and play a game, the options are endless.

Why are apps good?

Perhaps their main benefit is their convenience. You can access information, services or products at any time, wherever you are. For example, banking apps let you manage your money from the comfort of your sofa. Or when you’re out shopping in town.

They are hugely efficient. You can save time and effort by streamlining tasks, such as ordering a taxi with just a few taps or booking a table at a restaurant.

You can use them for entertainment and learning. Whether you’re streaming a TV series like Slow Horses or learning a language with Duolingo, apps provide fun and educational experiences.

They can also be cost-effective. Many apps, especially those related to public services (such as the NHS app), are free or provide services at reduced costs.

How to get the apps you want

Finding and installing apps is straightforward. Both iPhone users and Android users can access apps via app stores (Apple’s App Store or Google Play Store). Downloading an app is straightforward once you know how. Just search for the app by using keywords or the app’s name in the search bar of your device’s app store. Check the app’s reviews and ratings to ensure it’s reputable, then tap ‘Install’ or ‘Get’. Once installed, open the app and follow the setup instructions.

Staying safe while using apps

You must stay vigilant. Cybercrime, whether via apps or other devices, is a constant threat. Only download from trusted sources. Stick to official app stores like Google Play or Apple’s App Store to avoid fake apps.

Apps often request access to your location or contacts but only grant permissions that are necessary for the app’s functionality. And update your apps regularly. By doing so you can protect against security vulnerabilities.

Always, always be wary of scams. If an app looks suspicious or asks for too much personal information, it might be a scam. For more advice, visit the National Cyber Security Centre. Stay safe.
