The investigation into the explosion at ESP Smile’s large-format printing unit in Swindon is continuing.

The incident on Wednesday 24th September caused significant disruption to one of the region’s busiest print-on-demand businesses, which is based on the Groundwell Industrial Estate.

Emergency services confirmed there were no injuries, but nearby buildings were evacuated and residents advised to stay indoors. Power was isolated across the area, and firefighters remained on site overnight to dampen down hotspots.

ESP Smile, part of the Handel Group alongside ESP Colour, specialises in digital and inkjet printing of personalised products including canvases, books, mugs and photo gifts. The firm handles millions of orders annually.

ESP Colour, located two miles away, remains operational. The group has not yet issued a formal statement, but contingency planning is expected to be underway.

Swindon Borough Council leader Jim Robbins described the timing as “very lucky,” noting that few people were present at the time. He pledged support for affected businesses, stating the council would work to “get them back up and running as quickly as possible.”
